Oat and Buckwheat Muesli

Oat and Buckwheat Muesli Posted By: admin Posted In: nutrition Date Posted: July 19th, 2012 Comments: skd187508sdc

Ingredients:

1 ½ cups rolled oats (not instant oatmeal)

½ cup puffed buckwheat

1 cup organic pears, diced

1 banana

1 cup red grapes, halved

½ cup dried apples, chopped

3 tbsp brown sugar

2 teaspoons ground cinnamon

Milk, almond milk, or rice milk to serve

Prep:

Preheat oven to 325°F. Spread oats evenly in a non-stick baking tray and bake in oven for about 10 minutes, stirring occasionally. Watch oats very closely while they bake as they can burn easily if overly cooked. Remove from oven and cool completely.  Pour oats into a large ceramic or glass bowl and add water (make sure all oats are covered in water). Let soak in the refrigerator overnight.  Add puffed buckwheat, dried apples, cinnamon, and brown sugar to soaked oats. Stir well. Divide mixture into serving bowls and top with pears, bananas, and grapes. Serve with your milk of choice. Enjoy!

Benefits:

Rolled oats are one of the best foods you can eat. High in fiber, calcium, protein, manganese, copper, and Vitamin E to name a few, this is one of the best foods that will make you healthier from the inside out. It will help you digest food much more easily and will help remove toxins from your body more quickly. This faster digestion will alleviate toxins from weighing down your body, give you more energy, and make your skin look better in the process! Rolled oats are also great when added to topical treatments, including being used as an exfoliant on your skin. Check out our Homemade Facials section to read about some awesome homemade facials!

Buckwheat is a great whole grain to add to your regular diet and is rich in the antioxidant, Rutin, and also in Vitamin B. Rutin will help ease inflamed, red, and blotchy skin while Vitamin B will help your skin become more hydrated as opposed to dry and flakey (which can make you more oily since your skin needs a certain level of hydration and may over produce oil causing you to break out).

Bananas are rich in potassium and Vitamin C and will improve your skin texture and assist in making your skin clear and stay that way!  Pears, grapes, and apples all have amazing nutrients as well that will help your skin look better from the inside out. Remember, you are what you eat so listen to your elders advice from when you were little: “Eat plenty of fruits and veggies to keep you looking and feeling healthy!”

Eat Well And Exercise

Eat Well And Exercise Posted By: admin Posted In: nutrition Date Posted: July 19th, 2012 Comments: Eat Well And Exercise

An effective home acne treatment is a combination of different behavioral changes. If you want to lower your chances of outbreak and improve the overall condition of your skin, you must eat a healthy diet. Before going into the types of foods you should and shouldn’t eat, it must be noted that you must do other things in conjunction with your new diet to improve your skin.

Getting in at least a half hour of exercise a day will improve your overall health, which will naturally get rid of acne as an additional benefit. Try to do cardiovascular workouts when you have the time as they are the best kinds of workouts for your health. In addition to getting into an exercise regimen, also make sure you’re getting the necessary amount of sleep. Sleep deprivation is a cause of acne because of the detrimental effects it has on your health. The same goes for high stress levels. By going to bed a little earlier and fighting stress with exercise, you’ll begin to see an improvement in your complexion.

So, now that you’ve decided to make these lifestyle changes, it’s time to discuss what to eat. But before that, you should take a quick inventory of what you drink. Proper hydration is integral to your skin’s health. Water is an important component of skin cell development. If you want to keep your pores clear and your skin looking brighter, make sure you’re drinking the standard eight glasses of water today. Sugary drinks like soda and alcohol have adverse effects on your complexion. Limit your sugar and alcohol intake.

Chocolate Facial Mask

Chocolate Facial Mask Posted By: admin Posted In: Homemade Facials Date Posted: August 10th, 2012 Comments: 121385586

Ingredients:

1/3 cup cocoa powder

3 teaspoons heavy cream

2 teaspoons cottage cheese

¼ cup honey

3 teaspoons oatmeal

Prep:

Blend all of the ingredients together; a bullet blender or similar mixing device works remarkably well for this. Allow the mixture to sit for roughly 3-5 minutes before applying to your face and neck. Apply the mixture evenly to your face and neck and allow the mask to rest for 10-20 minutes before removing with a wash cloth and warm water.

Benefits:

Not only is a chocolate facial mask very easy to make, but it is also a great skin moisturizer that will leave your skin baby smooth. This mask will help rehydrate and rejuvenate your skin. A chocolate facial mask is also rich in flavanoids which will help maintain collagen and fight the effects of sun damage on your skin. The chocolate facial mask will also remove dead skin cells and reduce the size and appearance of wrinkles. This helps to give your skin a healthy natural glow.

This chocolate facial mask is also packed with anti-oxidants which will help to prevent free radicals from damaging your natural skin proteins. Most people believe that consuming too much chocolate can cause your skin to break out with acne. This moisturizing mask will not cause your skin to break out. In fact, it can help prevent breakouts caused by deposits of dead skin cells, oils and residue from beauty products such as foundations. Remember, as with any homemade facial, the fresher the ingredients, the better your results.

Grape Seed Oil Facial Mask

Grape Seed Oil Facial Mask Posted By: admin Posted In: Homemade Facials Date Posted: August 11th, 2012 Comments: 93290205

 Ingredients:

 1 ½ cups brown sugar

¼ cup grape seed oil

¼ cup almond oil

Prep:

Mix all of the ingredients together in a large mixing bowl. You may also choose to add a few drops of your favorite essential oil or scented oil, as grape seed oil does not have a strong scent or odor. Apply the some of the mixture evenly to your face and store the remaining mixture in a common household jar. Allow the mask to rest on your skin for approximately 15 minutes before gently removing with a warm wash cloth. You can store this mixture for up to 6 months by refrigerating it. Remove the mixture from the refrigerator and allow it to warm back to room temperature before reusing.

Benefits:

Grape seed oil is a very popular ingredient in many facial masks. The oil from the grape seed absorbs into the skin instead of coating the skin with an oily residue. It is a powerful moisturizer that not only will rejuvenate and rehydrate your skin, but it will also reduce the appearance of those annoying lines around your eyes. The Anti-oxidants within the mask will help reduce skin damage and wrinkles within your skin while leaving it clean and refreshed.

This mask is ideal for people who are looking for a gentle way to cleanse their skin and reduce some of the environmental damage that they have been exposed to recently. Grape seed oil also contains Polyphenol, which is a natural anti-inflammatory. This makes grape seed oil great for acne and sensitive or irritated skin. Grape seed oil is also a great anti-frizz serum for dry and damaged hair, making this incredible product a key element in any home beauty remedy.

Mexican Potato Omelet

Mexican Potato Omelet Posted By: admin Posted In: nutrition Date Posted: July 19th, 2012 Comments: 115983091

Ingredients:

8 large eggs (cage-free are best)

1 red-skinned potato (cleaned, halved, sliced thin)

2 scallions (sliced thin)

3 garlic cloves (chopped)

2 medium-sized plum tomatoes (chopped)

½ cup shredded pepper jack cheese

2 Tablespoons olive oil

2 Tablespoons cilantro (chopped)

½ teaspoon fresh squeezed lime juice

Salt and freshly ground black pepper

Prep:

Preheat oven to broil on low to medium heat.

Beat all 8 eggs in large bowl until blended well. Add ¼ tomatoes and ¼ cheese and mix together.  Set aside momentarily while you follow the instructions below for potato mixture.

Heat 1 tablespoon of oil in 10-12 inch oven-safe skillet on medium heat on stove-top. Once heated, throw in potatoes, cover with lid, and cook until golden brown (8-12 minutes). Add garlic and almost all the scallions (leave a tiny amount for a garnish when omelet cooked). Sprinkle some salt and pepper in the skillet for flavor and stir ingredients together for about a minute.

Add the rest of the oil to the skillet and pour egg combo over the potato mixture in the skillet. Cook for 8-10 minutes, lifting up edges of the egg so egg cooks almost completely through. Then sprinkle the rest of the cheese on top of the egg combo and place in oven to broil for about to minutes, allowing all the ingredients to set and hold together well.

In that 2 minutes of egg combo setting in the oven, make a quick salsa to garnish the omelet with. In a small bowl, mix the rest of the tomatoes, scallions, cilantro, and lime juice and pour over omelet once omelet is done in oven and on the serving platter. Cut into pieces, serve, and enjoy!

Serving size: 4 servings

Benefits:

Eggs are high in Vitamin A and studies have shown that this vitamin may prevent acne breakouts. Cellular reproduction is refueled by Vitamin A and aids in cells to reproduce in a healthy manner, minimizing your chances of getting skin tags and moles. Copper is also found in eggs and helps reduce scarring on the skin. Eggs are incredibly high in protein and the amino acids found in protein aid in repairing skin tissue and fighting acne, helping your skin look clear and healthy.

Tomatoes are high in antioxidants and contain Vitamins A and C. Tomatoes are great to eat but are also used in many topical skin treatments and help combat acne and wrinkles quite effectively. It is proven that eating tomatoes on a regular basis will keep your teeth, skin, hair, and body strong and studies show it can also fight certain cancers as well. Eating tomatoes daily will protect the skin against erythema from UV rays.

Potatoes are loaded with potassium, fiber, and Vitamin C. Vitamin C is proven to improve skin texture and skin color/skin tone over time.

Fight Acne with Food

Fight Acne with Food Posted By: admin Posted In: nutrition Date Posted: July 19th, 2012 Comments: 100184262

If you’re suffering from acne, you want to increase your antioxidant intake. So it’s time to make a visit to the produce department at your local supermarket! Fruits and vegetables are an excellent source of antioxidants. The purpose of increasing your antioxidant intake is to flush toxins and repair damaged cells. Improving your body’s healing potential will help you get rid of acne faster by fighting bacteria that can settle on and in the skin.

When you’re trying to get rid of acne quickly, it’s best to eat foods as close to their natural state as possible. Cooking fruits and vegetables causes them to lose much of their nutritional value. Also, when possible, opt for organic foods. They will be free of preservatives and additives that can contribute to a poor complexion.
